The What's New in the Library link has been replaced by a page called Today in the Library where you can find daily news on library-related activities. Be sure to check out the New Books page for a listing of just some of the new and used books recently added to the library. Many of the titles were suggested by the winners of the recent I Love to Read month contests. More titles will be posted this week.

Thank you to all the students who took part in Library Month activities. The new scanner was introduced during the book scanning races held on Manitoba Library Day on October 27. The fastest time for scanning five books in and out was approximately six seconds with Jeremy M. and Joel V. named the fastest book scanners (although Ms. Armstrong didn't participate). Students also played the Wikipedia game -- a research race that involves students starting on a random wikipedia page and clicking on links to arrive at a page entitled with a previously chosen topic. Students also played a number of board games.
A number of new books were introduced to the library during Library Month as well. You can see a list of them on the New Books page.
At lunch time on Halloween the library was lit only by a pumpkin as students participated in the ghost story or Halloween story open mic event. For reading their stories students received $5 gift certificates for McNally Robinson Booksellers donated by Ms. Armstrong. Thank you to Garrett P. for designing and Jeremy M. and Garret P. for carving the pumpkin. Also on display was Mzi's pumpkin. The pumpkins were designed and carved as part of the Wednesday at lunch art club organized by Ms. Adams.

A special activity will be held in the library tomorrow at noon. There will be a chance for students to read aloud their original ghost or Halloween stories. Spectators welcome. You will also get a chance to see some of the pumpkins carved in art club.

Welcome back to the staff of Carman Collegiate. Please feel free to drop by to discuss any of your reference needs for the coming year. I will be stocking the library with a number of new releases over the next few weeks that many of your students have been waiting for including Brisingr, the long-awaited sequel to the Elder and Eldest series by Christopher Paolini, The Sweet Far Thing the third book in a series by Libba Bray that began with A Great and Terrible Beauty and the fourth and final instalment of the Twilight series (in fact after multiple requests from students eager to finish the series, I will be adding books 2-3 to the library as well).
A trip to my favourite used bookstore (Aqua Books by the way) yielded excellent copies of a number of more adult reads including I am Legend, No Country for Old Men and Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses.
Books that arrived near the end of June that I made the time to read over the summer included the 2008 Giller Prize winner Late Nights on Air, I am Hutterite and In Defense of Food - all books which I recommend.
If your summer reading uncovered any other book gems, please drop by the library to let me know and encourage your students to to do the same. Have a great year!
