Ms. Armstrong gave a short presentation in the library to Grade 9 ELA students on how to use Ebscohost, a database of magazine, newspaper and encylopedia articles, TV and radio news scripts, and biographies. Click on the Ebscohost link on the sidebar for instructions on accessing this useful research tool.

YOUR LIBRARY

YOUR WORLD

NOW MORE THAN EVER

October is Canadian Library Month. To celebrate a number of new books have been added to the library over the last month. There will also be some special activities in the library in conjunction with Spirit Week. On Wednesday at lunch time join us for book checkout races, the Wikipedia game and board games. On Friday at lunch there will be readings of Halloween and ghost stories. If you have your own or a favourite story you would like to read, see Ms. Armstrong.

If you've spent any time in the library over the last two months you'll know that Lisa Richardson, Ms. Armstrong, and Mr. Rivest have been busy finalizing both the 2009 and 2008 yearbooks. Final proofs for the 2009 yearbook were delivered to the school today and the final proofs of the 2008 yearbook are expected early next week. Once the final changes are made (ideally by the end of the week) both books will enter the final printing stage. Thank you to everyone for their patience, particularly for the 2008 yearbook which was fraught with technical difficulties and had to be transferred to the new 2009 software before it could be completed. Work is already underway on the 2010 yearbook with the first official meeting held this past Monday. The next yearbook meeting will be Nov. 2 in the library at 12:30. If you agree to let our yearbook photographers take your photo, remember to smile!

Comic Con Contest for School Libraries

The library is participating in a fundraising opportunity through the Central Canada Comic Con being held in Winnipeg Saturday October 31 and Sunday November 1.  Every youth from our school who enters the door prize draw at the convention with the name of our school will gain $1 toward our library. A grand prize draw of $500 worth of books for a school library will be drawn from the entries.

Our library has received 10 free ticket vouchers for students 9-14. To redeem the $10 ticket you will require an adult to accompany you to the convention. Day passes for Saturday and Sunday are only available at the Convention Centre box office and are $18 per day. Weekend passes are available for $20 through Ticketmaster. These will allow you access to Friday, Saturday and Sunday events.

For your chance to win a free 9-14 ticket voucher - - put the name of your favourite comic book character or superhero as well as your name on one of the entry slips in the library. Then deposit the slip into the green draw box. If you win and cannot attend, please pass on your ticket voucher to someone who plans on attending. The voucher itself has no cash value and must be turned in at the Convention Centre box office to redeem a ticket. And remember, you will need an accompanying adult willing to pay the $18 ($12 plus ticket master fees) 15 years and up ticket fee.

The convention will feature over 100,000 square feet of displays, gaming, and sales of comics, graphic novels, books, toys, games, movies, sci-fi anime, trading cards, cartoons, art, and more. This year’s special guests will include Peter Mayhew, otherwise known as Chewbacca on Saturday, and Adam West of Batman fame on Sunday. Batmobile will also be displayed at the event. You can find out more, including information about all the other special guests that will be in attendance at www.cccomiccon.com.  The complete schedule including times the special guests will appear is here http://www.cccomiccon.com/programming/main-stage

Every year as part of the convention some of the proceeds go toward a worthy cause. Organizers chose school libraries because many artists and writers got their start by reading fantasy and science fiction books from their school libraries.
